Creating a Login.gov Account and Signing In

Before Proceeding with Creating an Account

⚠️ Using ArcGIS Pro with a Login.gov account

If you intend to use this account to log in to ArcGIS Pro, you MUST have version 2.8.2 or higher installed.

Already have a Login.gov Account?

If you already have a Login.gov account, you can use that account unless you wish to create a new one. To use an existing Login.gov account, choose one of the authentication methods:

  1. Logging in with CAC/PIV Card

  2. Logging in with Login.gov account (email and password) using two-factor authentication

Creating a New Login.gov Account

  1. Visit Login.gov Account Creation to begin signing up for a new Login.gov account.

  2. Enter your email address.

  3. Select a language preference, then click Submit.

  4. Upon pushing the Submit button, you are directed to verify your email address.

  5. Click the Confirm email address button in the confirmation email that you find in your inbox.

  6. The Confirm email address button will open up a page that will allow you to create a password for your Login.gov account.

  7. Enter a password and click the Continue button

  8. After creating a password and clicking the Continue button you will be directed to an authentication setup page to set up two-factor authentication. Choose a method that best suits your security needs. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be walking through the steps for using an Authentication application.

Select preferred authentication method by choosing Option A or Option B below. If you want to use both, you can add additional authentication methods by going to your Login.gov account.

Option A - Adding CAC or PIV Card for Authentication

  1. On the authentication page, select Government employee ID and click the Continue button

  2. Give your government ID a nickname and click Add PIV/CAC card button

  3. Select PIV/CAC certificate and click Ok.

  4. Enter PIN and click OK

Logging in to GeoPlatform ArcGIS Online with Login.gov using Option A

  1. Now with a fully authenticated (CAC/PIV) Login.gov account visit https://geoplatform.maps.arcgis.com/ to sign in to GeoPlatform with your Login.gov account

  2. Click the GeoPlatform Login.gov Account button. Selecting the Login.gov option opens the Login.gov sign-in page.

  3. Select Sign in with your government employee ID

  4. Insert your PIV/CAC

  5. Select certificate and click OK

  6. Enter PIN and click OK

Option B - Adding Two-factor Authentication (2FA)

  1. On the authentication setup page, select the Authentication application option and click the Continue button.

  2. To set up give, give your authenticator a nickname and either scan the QR code or manually enter the code for the authenticator app.

  3. With a Login.gov authenticator set up in the authenticator app, enter the temporary code and click the Submit button.

  4. After submitting the information above the Login.gov account creation is complete

Logging in to GeoPlatform ArcGIS Online with Login.gov using Option B

The following steps are for signing in with email and password only.

  1. Now with a fully authenticated Login.gov account visit https://geoplatform.maps.arcgis.com/ to sign in to GeoPlatform with your Login.gov account

  2. Click the GeoPlatform Login.gov Account button.

  3. Selecting the Login.gov option opens the Login.gov sign-in page

  4. Enter your email and password and click the Sign in button to complete the GeoPlatform sign-in process using Login.gov.

  5. For first time sign ins, click “Agree and Continue

  6. Check your email for verification link from servicedesk@geoplatform.gov. Please be patient at this step. If you haven’t received the verification email, check your spam or junk folder and even the Promotions folder for Gmail. If you still have not received it, give it another minute or two before clicking to resend as multiple clicks will result in multiple emails. If this occurs, only select the most recent link as all previous links are no longer valid. The link expires after 10 minutes.

  7. Click “Link to e-mail address verification” in the email. If it prompts you to sign in again, please do so.

  8. You are now logged into ArcGIS Online. Note: You will see your profile at the top right when sign in is successful.
